Nonprofit or an LLC? Why This Founder Started Both

Nonprofit or LLC; Why not both?

Keisha Montfluery is the founder of HandiWork, LLC and her faith-based nonprofit Abundantly Authentic. In today's video, we are discussing her decision to start a nonprofit AND and LLC in order to create a stronger social impact for her community.

Although she started her nonprofit in 2018 she already has multiple income streams. This has allowed her to leave her full-time job and work part-time while she raises her 3 children as a single mom and business owner.

If you're wondering whether you should start a nonprofit or LLC, this is the interview for you! She'll be talking about the difference and similarities in her LLC, HandiWork and her Nonprofit Abundantly Authentic.

“I think the hardest part about starting off is ACTUALLY making the decision to do it.” - Keisha Montfluery

Business ON Purpose

Q: What is your social impact business mission?
A: Our PURPOSE is to encourage our girls to practice HEALTHY CONFIDENCE so she is not giving in to negative behavior such as self-harm and bullying

Q: What is your background and how did you come up with the idea?
A: I have a Bachelors degree in Child/Human Development and over 17 yrs of experience working with our youth and their families. Also, I participated in unhealthy relationships and developed a strong passion and desire to make sure that our girls are not making the same mistakes

Q: What was the hardest part about starting and how did you overcome it to actually get it off the ground?
A: I think the hardest part about starting off is ACTUALLY making the decision to do it. To overcome this I made sure that I connected with like-minded people and made a conscious effort to stay focused. I take advantage of every opportunity to share my passion

Profit ON Purpose

Q: How did you start making a profit in your business?
A: Wow, it took at least a year for me to finally start seeing the monetary fruit, I started by offering my services to reputable businesses in the area in exchange for a testimonial, or connecting with moms that would allow me to coach their girls in exchange for testimonials.

Q: What's your preferred method or place to share your purpose with the world?
A: I learned very early on that social media is JUST a tool (so although I use it frequently, I do not depend on it), but making sure that I connect and network (in the best way I know how), and taking advantage of every opportunity to share my passion

Q: What have you found to be the hardest part about profit-building?
A: I think right now it's developing strategies to create consistent income

Life ON Purpose

Q: What was the hardest part about managing it all and learning to combine life and business?
A: Really learning that BALANCE is different for everyone and that it's always going to need to be adjusted to what's going on in my life and what the focus needs to be at the time. Being PRESENT with my family and friends.

Q: What are your top productivity tips and tools you would recommend for other social impact business founders?
A: I would say to PREPARE and try to be as ORGANIZED as possible. This can be something as easy as preparing for the next day...making a small list of the things you have to do. And to keep all of your paperwork together or create a system that will allow you to maximize your time (like creating a word document with your bio, so if someone asks, you can just copy and paste...etc.)

Q: What does a typical day in your life look like?
A: Whew, right now I am in transition because summer is coming to an end and the kids are going back to school. I have not only my non-profit and LLC, but I have a part-time position for another company, so I am trying to prepare as much as possible have to actually work the schedule out to see what works and what doesn't.

Q: What is your best advice for anyone starting on this journey?
A:
I would say to definitely keep yourself surrounded with like-minded people, stay consistent , be creative, and always be open to learning and trying new things. BALANCE is different for everyone and it's always going to need to be adjusted to what's going on in my life and what the focus needs to be at the time.
